Last year, VR market is still dominated by hardware, and future AR will surpass VR

The data analysis company Super Data recently released the 2017 VR market report. This report shows that last year the global VR market was still dominated by hardware, with hardware sales accounting for 75%. Spuer Data expects XR market hardware and software revenues to reach $760 million in 2018, driven by AR/MR development and successful games. The development of smart phones will allow AR/MR to lead 360 VR by 2021.

In terms of software, games account for 55% of VR consumer software revenue. HTC Vive and PSVR have higher player viscosities, and mobile VR is even more dominant in number, but profits account for only 15% of VR game revenue. Bethesda's two games, "Radiation 4" and "The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim" won the 2017 PC VR and PSVR earnings list championships respectively. Nearly half of VR users are enterprise users, including some schools and hospitals, but their spending power is not very good.

The report also believes that mobile AR will become the main driver of revenue by 2021, about twice the revenue of VR/MR head-display software. In the short term, high-end VR headsets will still affect their popularity among consumers due to the relatively high selling prices.
